Winterswijk lies in the Achterhoek of the province Gelderland. For those who do not know this part of Gelderland it is a truth discovery. Tip: the steengroeve

the steengroeve, the oldest earth-gene of the Netherlands come above. In the steengroeve a lot of fossils are found of Dinosauriërs, shells and fish rests. Since 1932 the steengroeve has been used for the grubbing of limestone. Also pyrite and a sulphur iron connection (the gold of Winterswijk) are found. Tip: The Korenburgerveen

The Korenburgerveen, one of the most valuable property of nature monuments. A so-called bowl peat, because it lies lower than the neighbouring grounds. As from the middle ages here peat levellings have taken place and this way the water places are growing thick now. The dying plants ensure a peat shaping and so the moor returns. Further we find blew-grassland: by not cultivating the land we find very rare plants, such as orchids, parnassia and also the carnivorous plant sundew. This nature area himself is only some hundreds meters of the bungalow. a part of the peat can become visited without forester. In short the Korenburgerveen is something real for nature devotees.

Tips: bicycles by the landscape

If you cycle through this splendid region and you will always discover something new, you will cycle undoubtedly along water mill Berenschotr which descends from 1749 and lies at the domain Bekendelle in neighbourhood Woold. In the mill a restaurant has now established. Within you can see the mill in functioning. The river Slinge operate the mill.

Tips: Lake Hilgelo

With Lake Hilgelo Winterswijk has a busy visited water recreation-area (36 ha.), it is located to the Meddoseweg, approximately 1 km outside of the center of Winterswijk. There is a splendid sand range, child-playground and its possibilities for water bicycles and windsurfing. For a part of the lake it has been nicely forested and an area with superb view to lake Hilgelo .
